Speculation suggesting Julen Lopetegui could exit Wolverhampton Wanderers after just eight months have been dispelled, with the Spanish manager keen to remain at Molineux.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim the former Spain and Real Madrid manager wants to continue at Wolves despite their financial restrictions.
Lopetegui joined Wolves during the World Cup break and transformed their troubled campaign, steering them from relegation to a respectable 13th-place finish in the Premier League.
After working his magic, there were fears the experienced 56-year-old could walk away from the club after being reportedly blindsided by the club’s financial limitations.
Lopetegui has done a remarkable job at the club but will require significant backing this summer to build on their miraculous relegation escape.
However, having spent over £100 million last summer and a further £75m to back Lopetegui in the January transfer window, Wolves will be unable to fork out similar amounts this summer due to Financial Fair Play concerns.
Lopetegui claimed to have been unaware of the club’s economic situation until after a meeting with the executive chairman Jeff Shi at the end of last season.
The Spanish tactician has two years remaining on his deal with Wolves and has reportedly informed the club that he will take charge of his first full season at Molineux despite the new development.
Wolves are set for a squad overhaul, with several players expected to leave the club this summer, including striking duo Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa.
Costa arrived on a free transfer from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro, signing a short-term contract to help the club deal with their injury crisis in the striking department, but he is not in their long-term plans.
Club captain Ruben Neves has one year remaining on his contract and is still attracting interest from Spanish champions Barcelona, while Adama Traore has an offer from Real Betis.
