Andrey Santos finalising work permit application ahead of joining Chelsea first-team

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos is finalising a work permit to allow him to play in England, reports the Evening Standard.

The Blues signed the Brazilian in January but he missed out on obtaining a work permit by just one point.

The 19-year-old was loaned back to Vasco da Gama and has finally qualified to obtain a permit.

Santos was at the British consulate in Brazil yesterday to complete the relevant paperwork and move to England.

The Chelsea starlet has boosted his chances of getting his visa approved after adding points to his application.

Santos has made his full international debut for Brazil after earning a call-up in March.

He has also been playing in the Brazilian top flight this year having helped Vasco secure promotion from the Serie B last year.

Santos also captained Brazil at the under-20 South American Championship in February, and it is expected that his work permit application will be successful.

He wants to link up with the Chelsea squad for the start of pre-season and impress manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues need midfield reinforcements as they prepare for the expected departures of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.

Santos was signed for first-team purposes in January but must convince Pochettino of his qualities.

The Argentine never hesitates to hand youngsters chances once they can prove themselves.

Santos has what it takes to become a regular for Chelsea, and he will be eager to hit the ground running.

Premier League clubs are also close to giving formal backing to plans which would allow them to sign up to four promising overseas players a season who would not get work permits under the current system.

The proposal incentivises teams by letting them sign young overseas stars if substantial minutes have been given to English-qualified players.

It gives Santos a huge chance of becoming available for selection even if he fails to meet the required points.
