Tottenham contemplating summer move for Conor Gallagher

A new dawn has arisen at Tottenham Hotspur following an underwhelming 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

New manager Ange Postecoglou is keen to put his stamp on the squad he inherited from interim boss Ryan Mason.

After missing out on European qualification for the first time in over a decade, Tottenham may be looking to integrate new members into Postecoglou’s set-up as soon as possible.

With numerous incomings and outgoings expected to occur in north London in the coming months, a reconstruction of the engine room is among the Australian tactician’s priorities.

If the latest report from football.london is to be believed, wantaway Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could be one of Postecoglou’s first acquisitions at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs have laid the groundwork for the arrival of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to replace long-serving captain Hugo Lloris, who’s on his way out.

But Postecoglou doesn’t want to waste time reinforcing other departments, with Tottenham putting Callagher in their sights.

The Englishman could be free to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after failing to meet the club’s high criteria last season.

Following an inspiring loan at Crystal Palace in 2021/22, the 23-year-old returned to Chelsea last summer, hoping to establish himself as a senior star in the Premier League.

Despite making 35 league appearances for the Blues in 2022/23, including eight starts in the last nine matches under caretaker manager Frank Lampard, he appears to have no future with the club.

While waiting for Mauricio Pochettino’s final decision on Gallagher’s future, the midfielder will be able to choose between several decent-looking destinations.

Before Tottenham joined the race to prise him away from the Bridge, Newcastle United were among the top candidates to sign the Englishman.

Gallagher may not be the only cause for transfer combat between Spurs and the Magpies, with both clubs setting their sights on Leicester City playmaker James Maddison.
