James Milner’s contract at Liverpool has yet to expire officially, but the veteran has already agreed to join Brighton & Hove Albion.
After confirming his Anfield departure towards the tail-end of the 2022/23 season, the 37-year-old has secured a lifeline in the Premier League.
Milner has reached a short-term agreement with last season’s surprise package to join them on a season-long deal with the option to extend for a further year, as announced by the East Sussex outfit.
He will swap allegiances when his contract at Liverpool runs out on June 30 to add experience to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad ahead of their maiden foray into the Europa League.
Thrilled for bringing an experienced Premier League campaigner to the Amex Stadium, the Italian manager told the Seagulls’ website: “I’m very glad to welcome James to Brighton.
“He’s an excellent addition for us and I’m sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level.”
Having come through the Leeds United youth academy, Milner made his Premier League breakthrough in 2004 with Newcastle United before moving to Aston Villa in 2008.
Following a decent two-year stint at Villa Park, he linked up with Manchester City in 2010 before signing for Liverpool in 2015.
During his illustrious career at Anfield, the former England international has won everything there was to win, including the Champions League and the Premier League.
Milner’s experience shall benefit Brighton’s bid to leave a positive first impression in Europe next season, especially in the wake of Alexis Mac Allister’s switch to Liverpool.
In addition to the Argentine midfielder, the Seagulls will soon part with another significant first-team cog in Moises Caicedo, who’s been targeted by Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Brighton have already taken the necessary steps to address the dwindling midfield numbers within their ranks.
They recently secured their first summer signing, parting with a club-record transfer fee of £30 million to bring in Joao Pedro from Watford.
