Lionel Messi says he won’t play at the next World Cup

Lionel Messi has disclosed that he will not participate in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

His extraordinary performances led Argentina to victory at Qatar 2022. The World Cup win topped a remarkable collection of medals for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The 35-year-old hinted before the tournament that he would not return for another one.

The Rosario-born attacker reiterated this stance following his imminent move to the US to join Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

Chinese outlet Titan Sports asked him if he expected to extend his international career until the 2026 World Cup.

“I think not,” Messi responded. “This was my last World Cup. I will see how things go, but not in principle. I won’t go to the next World Cup.”

Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni had been hopeful that Messi would be part of his plans as they defended their title.

Messi recently left Paris Saint-Germain after a successful two-year stint. The Argentine star had various offers from clubs in Europe and the Middle East.

However, he ultimately chose to join Miami in the MLS. Many people felt he could continue in Europe. He recorded elite numbers last season but chose a move to America.

With Messi’s decision to conclude his World Cup journey after the 2022 final, fans will undoubtedly cherish the remaining opportunities to witness his skills.

As he embarks on a new chapter with Miami, football enthusiasts will eagerly follow his exploits in the MLS and await further milestones from this footballing legend.

Former teammate and close friend Neymar already stated that he believes Messi will change the football landscape in the US.
