Charismatic and controversial former Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has passed away at the age of 86, according to Sky News.
The media mogul breathed his last at Milan’s San Raffaele hospital today, leaving a void in the hearts of his supporters and adversaries alike.
The news comes after Berlusconi battled health challenges, including lung infection and undisclosed chronic leukaemia.
Berlusconi previously served as the president of AC Milan and was the current owner of AC Monza. He has left an indelible mark on Italian politics, sports and media.
Known for his flamboyance and larger-than-life personality, he was revered and reviled in equal measure.
Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, expressed his grief at the loss, calling it the end of an era.
A series of financial and sex scandals marred Berlusconi’s political career. The incidents made him one of the most polarising figures in modern Italian history.
His involvement in sex parties, infamous for their association with prostitutes, caused a major political upheaval within the country.
The billionaire businessman led Italy three times between 1994 and 2011. He faced numerous legal battles during his tenure.
One such scandal involved allegations of paying for sexual services from Karima El Mahroug, also known as ‘Ruby the Heartstealer’, when she was under 18.
However, although initially convicted, the court later acquitted Berlusconi after he appealed.
Aside from politics, Berlusconi’s love for football led him to take over Milan. He turned the club into a global powerhouse.
Under his ownership, Milan achieved great success, winning numerous domestic and international titles.
As news of Berlusconi’s demise spreads, tributes have poured in from across the world.
Berlusconi’s passing marks the end of an era that many will remember for its affluence, controversy and lasting impact on Italian politics and football.
