Chelsea are gearing up to make a move for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to the Express.
The Blues have missed out on Manuel Ugarte to Paris Saint-Germain. They were close to securing him before Les Parisiens moved ahead in the race.
Chelsea have identified Lavia as a top target as they aim to rebuild their midfield under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
They previously made a £50 million bid for the talented 19-year-old last summer, but Southampton rejected the offer.
The London club tried again in January, with then-manager Graham Potter even discussing a potential move with Lavia over the telephone.
However, their attempts were fruitless as the Saints rejected the proposal. The deal involved signing Lavia and loaning him back for the remainder of the season.
Undeterred, Chelsea are now ready to reignite their pursuit of the Belgian midfielder.
Lavia has been considered as an alternative to Ugarte. The Blues have maintained regular contact with the player’s representatives since their failed attempts to sign him.
Chelsea’s director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields, played a key role in bringing Lavia to Southampton from Manchester City.
Lavia has had discussions with Chelsea icon Eden Hazard about life at Stamford Bridge.
Hazard, who previously enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, encouraged his international teammate to seize the opportunity if it arises.
Arsenal and Liverpool are also keeping an eye on Lavia’s situation, although the Merseyside have prioritised other targets after agreeing to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Alexis Mac Allister.
It is worth noting that Manchester City inserted a buy-back clause into Lavia’s contract, which will become active in 2024.
They also secured a sell-on clause of 20%. This clause ensures they have a stake in any future transfer involving their academy product.
Southampton will be hoping to secure a substantial fee, potentially around £45m, for their promising young midfielder.
