Marco Asensio prefers Aston Villa over Serie A switch

Real Madrid ace Marco Asensio could leave the club after seven years when his contract runs out at the end of next month.

Despite the Spaniard’s overwhelming desire to pledge his long-term future to the Santiago Bernabeu outfit, negotiations over his contract extension have reached an impasse.

As reported by Calciomercato, if Asensio’s bid to prolong his stay in the Spanish capital, Aston Villa could be his next destination, regardless of genuine interest from Serie A heavyweights AC Milan and Juventus.

Heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool in the past, the 27-year-old could finally touch down in the Premier League but in an unlikely spot.

Villa’s ambitions have skyrocketed after Unai Emery helped the Lions return to European football after over a decade, enhancing their prospects in the transfer market.

No strangers to bringing in household names such as Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho, a long-awaited European return means they need to sign some more.

Landing a player of Asensio’s quality and stature without paying a compensation fee is an opportunity Emery is reluctant to pass on, with Villa moving at the head of the queue to capture his signature.

The versatile forward has other offers on the table.

Milan and Juventus are long-term admirers of the former Mallorca man, with the former able to bring the lure of Champions League football to the table following last Sunday’s 1-0 win at the Allianz Stadium.

But Asensio is more interested in plying his trade in the Premier League than Serie A, even though it means he’d have to settle for Europa Conference League football next season.

Madrid’s stance on their winger’s future remains undisclosed, but there’s a feeling the parties will separate at the end of next month after the Spanish star slipped down the pecking order.

He has bagged 55 goals in 262 appearances for Los Merengues but is no longer a regular in the starting XI.
