Mats Hummels signs one-year contract extension with Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has extended his stay at the club by another year.

The 34-year-old remains an instrumental player for BVB even as he approaches the twilight of his career.

Hummels has made 29 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this season, helping them keep six clean sheets.

The Germany international has also made four appearances in the DFB Pokal and another four in the Champions League.

Hummels could end the season with silverware. Dortmund enter the final game against Mainz at the top of the Bundesliga and can seal the title with a win.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said (via BVB’s official website): “I’m really happy that Mats Hummels is staying at Borussia Dortmund for another year.

“He identifies strongly with our club. BVB and Mats simply belong together.”

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: “With his experience and leadership, it’s very good that Mats will still be available to our young team next season.

“He’s a very, very important player for this team because he gives it a lot in terms of hierarchy, in terms of leadership.”

Hummels has played for Dortmund since the 2007/08 season. The Munich-born centre-back has made 468 club appearances for the club.

Hummels helped Dortmund win the Bundesliga title in 2011 and 2012. He also won the DFB-Pokal in 2012 and 2021 and the World Cup with Germany in 2014.

If Dortmund clinch the title, Hummels would become the sixth player to win it three times with the club.
