Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed that manager Simone Inzaghi will remain at the club beyond this summer following a dramatic upturn in fortunes.
Inzaghi had flirted with the sack during Inter’s turbulent period that saw them win just one of their seven games between March and April which threatened their top-four challenge.
Inter reportedly deliberated over several options. Cristian Chivu, manager of the club’s under-19 side, was considered for a caretaker role until the end of the season.
An extensive shortlist of potential candidates to replace the Italian at the start of next season was also drawn up, with a number of high-profile names touted.
However, Inter have since made a managerial U-turn that will see Inzaghi retain his place as head coach next season following significant improvements in results and performances.
Inter had previously enjoyed an astonishing run of form, racking up eight consecutive victories before being halted at the home of the Serie A champions Napoli.
The Nerazzurri chiefs are pleased with recent events, and CEO Marotta has ended speculation about Inzaghi’s future, insisting the 47-year-old will remain at the San Siro Stadium next season.
“This year, we have never thought, not even for a second, of replacing Inzaghi.,” Marotta firmly declared (via Daniele Mari).
“He managed to strengthen his position thanks also to the team’s performances which are the result of his technical guidance. His confirmation is 100%. He is and will be our coach again next year.”
Inter’s impressive eight-game winning streak saw them book a place in the Coppa Italia and Champions League final while consolidating their spot in the top four.
Inzaghi’s side will defend their Coppa Italia crown against Fiorentina before facing Premier League champions Manchester City in a battle for European football’s holy grail.
Their top-four push has also been aided by the misfortune that has befallen rivals Juventus. The Bianconeri have been docked 11 points for capital gains irregularities.
