Nine people killed in stampede at football stadium in El Salvador

At least nine people have reportedly been killed and several others injured after a stampede at a football stadium in El Salvador.

The incident occurred at the Monumental Stadium in Cuscatlan, which was hosting a quarter-final match in the Salvadoran league between Alianza and FAS.

The chaos ensued when fans pushed through one of the access gates at the stadium.

Alianza and FAS are two of the most successful football teams in El Salvador, winning 35 league championships between them.

The National Civil Police confirmed on Twitter that nine people have died after the stampede.

The injured supporters have been taken to nearby hospitals, with two reportedly in critical condition.

The country’s health minister Francisco Alabi said that emergency teams had been deployed and around 90 people are being treated for injuries at local hospitals.

Meanwhile, President Nayib Bukele vowed that an exhaustive investigation would be carried out to identify the culprits and punish them.

Visuals shared by the National Civil Police showed several ambulances parked outside the monumental stadium and medics rushing to the scene.
