Inter Milan provide injury update on Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Inter Milan have confirmed that midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has suffered a muscle strain in his left thigh.

The Armenian midfielder was forced off the field right before the first half in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against AC Milan, which Inter won 1-0 to book their place in the final.

Inter’s statement read: “Henrikh Mkhitaryan underwent a medical examination this morning at the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano.

“The Nerazzurri midfielder has suffered a muscle strain in his left thigh. His condition will be monitored over the coming days.”

Although the extent of the injury is not revealed, it appears he will miss the weekend’s Serie A clash against Napoli and potentially the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina next week.

However, the biggest question will be whether he can return to fitness before next month’s Champions League final against Manchester City.

Mkhitaryan’s absence will be a massive blow as he has been a crucial figure for Simone Inzaghi this season, bagging five goals and two assists in 48 appearances.

Arriving on a free transfer from AS Roma last summer, the 34-year-old is considered one of the bargains of the season.

His most defining moment of the season came in the first leg of the semi-final against Milan, where he scored Inter’s second goal.

Marcelo Brozovic will likely replace Mkhitaryan in his absence in the upcoming games.

They are third in Serie A rankings, a point above Lazio and three points behind Juventus.

However, the Nerazzurri’s imperious form at the moment – eight consecutive wins in all competitions – indicates that they can comfortably finish inside the top four, lift the Coppa Italia and even have the chance to upset Man City.
