Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave Liverpool at the end of the season upon the expiry of their contracts, the club have confirmed via their official website.
It’s been a difficult season for Liverpool. Having come within inches of an unprecedented quadruple last year, they have been well below their usual standards this campaign, failing to win a trophy and sitting in fifth place with just two matches remaining.
Many people feel like a rebuild is needed at Anfield. Several key first-team players are now in their 30s, and some have begun to show signs of decline.
Liverpool have now revealed that four senior players will leave at the end of the season when their contracts expire.
Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in 2015 and quickly became a hit at the Merseyside club.
He shone in the ‘false nine’ role, forming a frightening frontline alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. He departs with 109 goals in 360 appearances for the Reds.
Milner came in on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2015. Since then, he has featured over 300 times for Liverpool and has covered several positions.
The peak of his career at Anfield came in the 2017/18 season when he recorded nine assists in the Champions League – a competition record.
Oxlade-Chamberlain arrived in 2017, signing from Arsenal for an estimated £35 million fee.
He made a bright start to life under Jurgen Klopp, but a lengthy injury in a Champions League semi-final tie kept him out of action for a year. In the season after his return, he helped his side to their first Premier League title.
Keita was also part of the side that won the Premier League, as well as the Champions League in 2019. He was signed in 2018 from RB Leipzig and has been in and out of Klopp’s starting XI ever since.
The quartet will be honoured at the club’s last home game of the season this weekend against Aston Villa. Their final appearances for the club could come against Southampton on May 28.
