‘Magnificent feeling’- Xavi reacts to Barcelona clinching the La Liga title

Barcelona have been crowned the champions of La Liga 2022/23 following the 4-2 victory against Espanyol.

Robert Lewandowski took the centre-stage with a double, while Alejandro Balde chipped in with a goal and an assist to help Barca prevail in the Catalan derby.

Despite suffering a group stage exit in the Champions League and a semi-final exit in the Copa del Rey, the Catalan giants dominated La Liga, keeping the defending champions Real Madrid at bay.

The league title is Barca’s first since 2019, and they have achieved it with four games to spare. They are also 14 points clear at the top of the table.

Barca manager Xavi offered his thoughts on the triumph, stating that it is crucial for the stability of the project.

“We are left with a magnificent feeling,” Xavi said (h/t Sport). “More than ten months of work, of sacrifice.

“It has been an extraordinary job. For the fans, for the club, it is important for the stability of the project, we must continue on this path.”

The celebrations were cut short as the Espanyol fans invaded the pitch to attack Barca players, with the defeat confirming Espanyol’s relegation.

“I think it was enough – the celebration is normal, the euphoria,” Xavi added. “But I think it was enough, we are not at home and we have to go to the (changing rooms).

“These reactions are difficult to control, and I told them it was time to go to the dressing room.”

Having already won the Spanish Super Cup earlier this year, Barca have added another trophy to their cabinet.

Barca were scrutinised for their Champions League disappointment and several off-field controversies, but they have proven the naysayers wrong by clinching the La Liga title.

Lewandowski is on his way to winning the Pichichi trophy in his debut season in Spain, as he leads the La Liga scoring charts with 21 goals.
