Everton manager Sean Dyche has thrown down the gauntlet to Manchester City ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash at Goodison Park.
The Toffees are at the thick of the relegation battle as they sit one place and two points above the drop zone in the Premier League rankings with three games left.
However, there is no shortage of confidence in the Everton locker room, especially after their thumping 5-1 victory over European hopefuls Brighton & Hove Albion in their last outing.
Dyche’s counter-attacking set-up worked a treat at the Amex Stadium as they ran out emphatic winners despite amassing just 22% possession.
The English manager will ask for more of the same from his side in Sunday’s tough contest but has called on the Toffees faithful to spur the team to an unlikely victory.
“I’m sure the Evertonians will back us as they do – it’ll be a really good atmosphere for us to go and play in,” said Dyche (via the Evening Standard).
“The message will be simple – just take it on. It’s a big challenge obviously. But it’s about taking it on with the mentality we showed at Brighton.
“All the details have got to be right against Man City. You might need them to have a soft one, and your key players play well – all of them things go in the melting pot. Yet, it’s still about us taking the game on.”
Everton climbed out of the relegation zone following last weekend’s shock victory, but they now face the daunting task of taking on the Premier League champions.
Pep Guardiola’s side are chasing a famous treble and could take another step towards realising their lofty ambitions with a win against the struggling Toffees.
The Cityzens currently lead title rivals Arsenal by a point with a game in hand, and they will be looking to consolidate their spot at the top of the table when they travel to Merseyside.
