West Ham looking to pip Chelsea and Spurs to Cork City midfielder Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh

West Ham United are interested in signing Cork City midfielder Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh, reports the Telegraph.

The 17-year-old is also on the radar of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Hammers are looking to beat their Premier League and London rivals to his services.

O’Brien-Whitmarsh had a trial at West Ham some years ago and they have kept tabs on him since.

The teenager is widely regarded as one of the Republic of Ireland’s youth prospects.

He has scored two goals in ten appearances in the League of Ireland Premier Division this season.

Despite being a regular for Cork City in Ireland’s top division, O’Brien-Whitmarsh will have to link up with the Hammers youth teams if he joins them.

West Ham won the FA Youth Cup last month, beating Arsenal under-18s 5-1.

They are hoping it will help boost their pulling power when competing for the best young talent.

The Irish teenager would prefer to join a team where a pathway to senior football is guaranteed.

Chelsea are notorious for buying youngsters and loaning them out in droves.

O’Brien-Whitmarsh could struggle to make it to their first team anytime soon if he moves to the Stamford Bridge club.

Spurs could be a great option, but West Ham have handed more chances to young players in recent seasons.

Manager David Moyes never hesitates to give opportunities to teenagers once they can prove themselves.

O’Brien-Whitmarsh will do well to move to such a club, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
