Carlo Ancelotti has been handed a massive boost ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final first-leg clash against Manchester City.
The Italian tactician confirmed in a press conference ahead of Thursday’s encounter that Luka Modric will be available for the mouthwatering showdown against the Cityzens.
The Croatian midfielder picked up a knock in the humbling 4-2 defeat against Girona before being replaced by Aurelien Tchouameni in the 63rd minute.
Modric was only allowed an eight-minute cameo in the subsequent hard-fought 2-1 victory over Osasuna in the Copa Del Rey final, with Rodrygo netting a brace to hand Los Blancos the trophy.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner had been sidelined with an unspecified injury problem recently, with initial reports suggesting he could miss the rest of the season.
However, the former Tottenham Hotspur man is now set to return to the fold ahead of the crunch Champions League encounter.
“He’s okay – he’s going to play tomorrow,” Ancelotti replied (via Mundo Deportivo) when asked about the fitness of the World Cup finalist.
Modric’s return to fitness will boost Madrid’s chances against the competition favourites Man City at Santiago Bernabeu, especially after last weekend’s triumph.
Having seen their chances of defending their La Liga crown fade into thin air with rivals Barcelona cruising to the title, Ancelotti’s side have shifted their attention to retaining their European trophy.
Madrid have lost two of their last four games in all competitions. However, their recent success in the domestic cup will boost their confidence.
Madrid and Man City will renew hostilities in Europe’s most prestigious tournament for the second successive campaign.
Los Blancos rallied to an astonishing comeback victory in last season’s semi-final clash against Pep Guardiola’s side before becoming eventual winners.
However, the odds are stacked against them this term, with the Cityzens itching to enact revenge, setting the tone for a pulsating encounter.
