Monday is here again which means it’s time for ‘Morning Mix’ – our weekly football column with a bit of music thrown in for good measure.
We look at two talking points from the past seven days and point you in the direction of some of the best football stories elsewhere on the internet.
We also offer a top tune recommendation to get you in the mood for the next week and what to watch out for over the coming days. Let’s get the ball rolling!
Thanks for the memories Jeff
In the spirit of ‘all good things must come to an end’, Sky Sports Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling has confirmed he is moving on at the end of the season.
When this show first launched in the 1990s, no one imagined it would become an integral part of the football landscape in the United Kingdom.
The fact that it did was primarily down to Stelling, with his boundless enthusiasm and football knowledge helping to carry a format that other outlets have copied but failed to replicate.
His interactions with the panel and hilarious link-ups with pitchside reporters such as Chris Kamara will be sorely missed. Thanks for the unbelievable memories, Jeff.
Leeds getting what they deserve
Remember when Leeds United’s sporting director Victor Orta sarcastically screamed ‘sack the board’ into a fan’s camera after the Whites beat Bournemouth in November?
They have subsequently picked up just 15 points from their last 21 matches and are in severe danger of relegation following their 4-1 defeat against the same opponents on Sunday.
A string of dodgy decisions by Orta have left Leeds bang in trouble, and they look a good bet to drop into the Championship at the end of the season.
However, it is difficult to have too much sympathy with their plight given the overbearing nature of their social media output when they won promotion in 2020. You reap what you sow.
The week that was
Are you looking for the best football stories from the past week? Check these out:
- Wrexham are back in the EFL – but how will they be received?
- Andriy Shevchenko: ‘I want to share with the world what Ukrainian people are feeling’.
- Don’t overthink this: Tottenham players refunding fans is a symbolic gesture.
Today’s top tune
We have Alexa to thank for this week’s music recommendation, which was uncovered after asking ‘her’ to play songs by Red Rum Club.
‘On the Road’ by Sunset Sons is a work of art. Quite how we’ve never stumbled across this before is one of life’s great mysteries.
What to watch this week
Four games without a win have put a severe dent in Arsenal’s title challenge. They desperately need to beat Chelsea on Tuesday to keep their faint hopes alive.
A final Morning Mix thought
A fist-pump celebration for Liverpool’s fortunate 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday? Jurgen Klopp really is a clown, isn’t he?
