Plymouth and Ipswich win promotion to Championship after victories on Saturday

Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town have won promotion to the Championship after their victories on Saturday.

The Pilgrims sealed a 1-0 success over Burton Albion at Home Park, with Neil Ennis scoring the decisive goal for the hosts.

James Wilson came close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the bar, but it was Ennis who provided the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time.

Steven Schumacher’s side dominated possession and looked in control of the game.

They could have won by a bigger margin if Bali Mumba, Dan Scarr and Finn Azaz had converted their chances late in the match.

However, the home fans will not be bothered by that as the result confirmed their return to the second tier for the first time since 2010.

The result sent them five points clear of third-placed Sheffield Wednesday in the table with one match remaining this season.

Ipswich also sealed promotion to the Championship with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Exeter City.

The Tractor Boys dominated proceedings as they hit five goals past their opponents within the first 32 minutes.

Conor Chaplin bagged a brace while Massimo Luongo, George Hirst and Nathan Broadhead all got on the scoresheet.

Welsh winger Wes Burns added another in the second half as they eased to a comfortable victory.

The latest home success means Ipswich have ended their four-season stay in League One.

Kieran McKenna’s side must better Plymouth’s result on the final day of the season to win the title.
