Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski ends goal drought in victory over Real Betis

Barcelona attacker Robert Lewandowski ended his drought with a goal against Real Betis in their La Liga clash today.

The 34-year-old steered home a lovely cross from Jules Kounde to double Barca’s lead against the Andalusians as they won 4-0.

Lewandowski leads the La Liga scoring chart with 19 goals. Karim Benzema’s hat-trick today places him second with 17 strikes.

It was Lewandowski’s first goal since he netted against Elche on April 1.

Lewandowski scored a brace in that game but has not scored in their five games since then.

The Pole blanked in the Copa del Rey semi-final clash against Real Madrid.

He also failed to find the back of the net in four consecutive La Liga games.

Lewandowski cut a frustrated figure after failing to score against Girona, Getafe, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.

However, he shed all that disappointment today and looked bright in the opening proceedings.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker was dropping deep to link up play and spread passes.

Betis had gone a man down after Edgar Gonzalez received his marching orders.

Barca capitalised and Lewandowski got his goal. The Catalans cruised to victory against a Betis side that was not at the races today.

Andreas Christensen opened the scoring in the 14th minute. The former Chelsea defender returned from an injury lay-off to dispatch a Raphinha cross.

Lewandowski doubled the lead before Raphinha killed the game. Sergio Busquets split Betis’ defence with a pass, and the lively Brazilian finished well.

There was a lengthy VAR check, but the goal stood. Barcelona had more chances in the second half but failed to take them until Guido Rodriguez scored a late own goal.

Xavi Hernandez took the opportunity to give 15-year-old Yamine Lamal his debut. The youngster looked bright and could have picked up a goal and an assist.

Yamal became Barcelona’s youngest-ever player in an impressive 10-minute cameo.

Barcelona remain top of La Liga with an 11-point lead over Real Madrid. Los Blancos beat Almeria 4-2 today but are far behind their rivals with six games left.
