Caglar Soyuncu set to join Atletico Madrid

Caglar Soyuncu is set to leave Leicester City at the end of the season after penning a four-year contract at Atletico Madrid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 26-year-old agreed to join Diego Simeone’s side in January. But the deal, which will tie him to the Metropolitano Stadium until 2027, has only just gone through.

Leicester splashed out around £18 million to acquire the Turkey international’s services from Freiburg five years ago but will be unable to recoup that figure.

Despite the club’s attempts to renew his contract, the robust defender was reluctant to pledge his future to Leicester amid the team’s faltering bid to secure top-flight survival.

He will depart the King Power as a free agent in the summer to team up with Atletico following a noticeable drop in form during the final stretch of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Leicester.

While many people expected Soyuncu to enjoy a rise to prominence following Harry Maguire’s mega-money move to Manchester United in 2019, it’s been quite the opposite.

His best performances for the Foxes came during Claude Puel’s reign, but his career has been on a downward curve over the past few years, largely due to recurring injury setbacks.

Upon Rodgers’ arrival in 2019, niggling injuries and problems with inconsistent showings have halted the Turk’s progress, seeing several top clubs drop their interest in him.

Soyuncu’s reluctance to commit to a new deal has seen Leicester demote him to the bench this season, resulting in the Turk accruing a mere five Premier League appearances.

He has regained his first-team status under new boss Dean Smith, racking up three league starts in a row after being handed just 79 minutes of top-flight football under Rodgers.
