Preview: Manchester City vs Arsenal – prediction, team news, line-ups

Manchester City and Arsenal face off at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash that could decide which way the Premier League crown swings this season.

City enter the title showdown fresh on the back of an emphatic 3-0 victory over Sheffield United that secured their place in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side are unbeaten in their last 16 games across all competitions (W13, D3) and will look to strengthen their treble ambitions when Arsenal visit Manchester for their midweek contest.

The Gunners were in a fight for their lives in their last league encounter against Southampton, scoring two late goals to rescue a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Having dropped points in their last three consecutive games (D3), Mikel Arteta’s side head to the Etihad knowing nothing but a win will do with their title hopes already hanging by a thread.

Match Preview

Only four points separate Man City from Wednesday’s opponents despite playing two games less, so Guardiola’s side are aware the fate of the Premier League title rests in their hands.

Having won their last six games in a row, the Spanish manager will ask for more of the same from his side, having already beaten Arsenal twice this season.

Guardiola will look to make it three in a row against his former protege, having won all six of their league games against the Gunners on home turf under Guardiola’s tutelage by an aggregate score of 17-3.

Man City’s home form has also been imperious as they have won 17 of their last 19 league games on home turf (D1, L1), but they will be wary of the Gunners as their four defeats at the Etihad this season have been against teams from the English capital.

Arsenal have faltered in their last three league games, but their title fate lies in their own hands. However, they must achieve a feat they have failed to do since 2015 – beat Man City at the Etihad.

Losing their last 11 league games against the reigning champions doesn’t bode well for their chances, and Arteta will need to come up with a winning formula to get the better of a side he has failed to beat as a manager in the competition.

The Spaniard will first need to fix his leaky defence, with Arsenal conceding at least twice in six of their last 11 league games, including each of the previous three in a row.

However, they have also scored at least twice in their last eight league games, which should give them enough confidence to trouble a Man City backline that have managed just two clean sheets in their previous ten league games.
