Liverpool could reunite Ajax duo in a spectacular £100m deal

Liverpool could undergo a massive squad overhaul in the summer following an abysmal 2022/23 season.

Despite winning their last two Premier League games by an aggregate score of 9-3, the Reds are on the brink of missing out on a top-four finish for the first time under Jurgen Klopp.

With only seven rounds left, the Merseyside heavyweights trail fourth-placed Manchester United by nine points in the Premier League table, with the Red Devils boasting a game in hand.

Unlike last season, when they were in the title race until the final seconds of the campaign, Liverpool endured a leaky domestic season, already conceding 12 goals more than they had in the entire 2021/22.

Ibrahima Konate has failed to live up to expectations, prompting Klopp to go on a scavenger hunt for a new defender to partner up with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of his backline.

Among names linked to a summer switch to Anfield, Ajax prodigy Jurrien Timber could be the most realistic option, particularly in light of the Lancers’ faltering top-two chase in the Eredivisie.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the most talented defenders in Europe, establishing himself as a permanent fixture in the Netherlands national team as he represented his country at the 2022 World Cup.

His future could be in the Premier League, as per Vandaag Inside, with Manchester United ready to rival Liverpool for his signature as Erik ten Hag aims to overhaul his defence in the summer.

But with Dutch national team counterparts van Dijk and Cody Gakpo plying their trade at Anfield, the Reds may have a bargaining chip to broker Timber’s move to Merseyside right under United’s noses.

He won’t come cheap, as Ajax may be looking to maximise their profit from the defender’s exit as they did with Lisandro Martinez last summer.

The Dutch giants may require around £60 million to sanction the youngster’s departure.

Timber is not the only up-and-comer linked with a big-money transfer to Liverpool, as Bayern Munich outcast Ryan Gravenberch seems to have caught Klopp’s eye.

Even though the 21-year-old midfielder departed Ajax to join the Bavarians as a generational talent last summer, he’s struggled to find his feet in the Bundesliga.

Gravenberch has made just one league start for Bayern this season and could sever ties with the record-time German champions in the summer to get his career back on track.

While Arsenal and Man Utd are also in the race to take the Dutchman to the Premier League, Liverpool are reportedly in the driver’s seat to get to his signature first.

Despite Gravenberch’s underwhelming maiden season at the Allianz Arena, Bayern may ask for up to £25m to release the highly-rated youngster.

It may take up to £100m to sign both Dutch talents, yet Klopp has no choice but to break the bank if he’s to restore the Reds to the Premier League elite.
