Thomas Tuchel delivers Sadio Mane update ahead of Man City rematch

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel insists Sadio Mane will return to the matchday squad for the return leg of his side’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City.

The record-time Bundesliga champions suffered an utter humiliation in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola’s rampant team thumped them 3-0 to put one foot in the semi-finals.

Bayern’s heavy defeat did not go down well with former Liverpool ace Mane, who entered a physical altercation with his teammate Leroy Sane in the aftermath.

As a ramification for punching the ex-Man City star in the face, Mane was removed from the squad and had to watch TSG Hoffenheim hold Tuchel’s out-of-form side to a 1-1 draw last weekend from the stands.

However, the 31-year-old has subsequently offered an apology to Sane, with the duo training together without further problems, suggesting they’ve managed to overcome an unpleasant bust-up.

Tuchel seems to have taken the Senegal international’s redemption well and is ready to bring him back to the fold ahead of Man City’s visit to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

“Sadio Mane will be in the squad because the topic with Sane is now settled,” he said, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano.

“Starting XI? We’ll have to wait and see tomorrow whether Mane starts.”

Mane’s unacceptable behaviour could be linked to his thoroughly frustrating season in Munich because he’s largely failed to emulate his superb Liverpool form in the Bundesliga.

After an illustrious career at Anfield, the versatile forward has tallied just 11 goals in 32 appearances for Bayern, alternating between a starting berth and a nursing room.

Unfortunately for the Germans, perhaps not even the prime Mane would suffice to turn things around in this one-sided quarter-final tie, considering Man City outclassed them in the first leg.

Tuchel’s team will be out to make history this midweek and become only the fifth side to progress from a Champions League knockout tie after losing the first leg by a 3+ goal margin.

Mane or not, it will be an almost impossible task.
