Arsenal second-choice goalkeeper Matt Turner has opened up on his relationship with Aaron Ramsdale and offered his view of Mikel Arteta and Bukayo Saka.
The 28-year-old keeper joined the Gunners from the Major League Soccer franchise New England Revolution as a back-up option for the England international.
While most of Turner’s appearances for Arsenal came in the Europa League, with Ramsdale remaining Arteta’s first option in the Premier League, the United States star believes the two have helped each other grow.
“Aaron and I have become better keepers from the challenge we’ve put forward to each other,” he said, as relayed by Ben Jacobs.
Turner also admits he understands why the former Sheffield United man is ahead of him in the pecking order, congratulating Ramsdale for a ‘great season.’
“He’s having a great season and has made big saves in big moments, so I can’t complain where I stand,” he added.
The 28-year-old stopper also hailed Arteta’s commitment and human qualities, revealing the Spaniard has a close relationship not only with his Arsenal players but also with their families.
“As a human being, he’s a super respectful person,” Turner said.” He has love for his players and their families. That’s a huge thing. He goes up to them after games, shakes their hand, and gives them a hug and a kiss.”
Arteta has turned Arsenal into genuine Premier League title contenders for the first time in two decades. His healthy relationship with the Gunners squad has been crucial to the team’s title push.
Last but not least, Turner praised Arsenal standout performer Saka for keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite his young age.
“He’s got a good head on his shoulders – he’s got the right mentality every day,” the American said.
“Our training sessions are super intense. I just had a kid and I get to training early. He’s usually there either before me or right after.”
