Alexander Nubel has rejected a permanent contract with AS Monaco in favour of a return to Bayern Munich this summer, according to Sky Germany.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper joined the Principality club in 2021 on a two-year loan deal.
Monaco want to sign Nubel permanently, but he is keen to establish himself with Bayern.
However, Nubel’s future in Germany will depend on the return of first-choice keeper Manuel Neuer.
Bayern tried to bring Nubel back in the January transfer window when Neuer suffered a skiing accident that ruled him out for the season.
However, Nubel refused, insisting on seeing out his contract in France before going back.
Many people felt he was trying to avoid then-goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovich.
The pair reportedly did not get along, but Tapalovich has since left the club.
There are also rumours that Neuer and Nubel do not see eye to eye.
Bayern signed Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach when Nubel refused to return. Die Rekordmeister now have three excellent goalkeeping options to choose from.
Nubel has developed his game with consistent playing time in Ligue 1 and Europe. The former German youth international did not settle quickly.
He was making high-profile errors that cost his side points at first, but eventually settled down and has been superb for Monaco.
Nubel has helped his side keep eight clean sheets in 30 league games. He is also useful with the ball at his feet, recording a 70% passing accuracy per game.
There are still errors in his game that he needs to iron out, but he believes he can do that and become Bayern’s first choice.
