Chelsea shortlist Jose Mourinho for vacant managerial role

Chelsea have contacted former boss Jose Mourinho for their vacant managerial role, according to Relevo.

The Blues sacked Graham Potter following their 2-0 loss to Aston Villa – a result that left the club 11th in the Premier League.

Chelsea want to take their time to find a manager that ticks all their boxes. They have a long-term project and need the right man to lead it.

They have spoken to Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique and will also reportedly talk with Mauricio Pochettino. Napoli’s Luciano Spalletti is also in the mix.

They have now added Mourinho to their list of potential managers. The 60-year-old is the club’s most successful boss of all time.

Mourinho enjoyed two successful spells with the club and fans consider him a legend.

He has been tipped to leave Roma this summer due to tensions between him and sporting director Tiago Pinto.

Mourinho led Chelsea to two league titles in his first spell at the club between 2004 and 2007, helping to establish them as a European powerhouse.

However, things ended on a sour note as former club owner Roman Abramovich dismissed him. He brought Mourinho back in 2013.

Mourinho won another double in the 2014/15 season, but things went south afterwards and he was axed again.

Nagelsmann and Enrique are still the leading candidates, but the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss is another option on Chelsea’s radar.

Mourinho is a proven winner who knows the club, but Chelsea’s owners will be wary of undertaking a long-term project with him.

He does not have the best record with developing youngsters and has not spent longer than three years at any club.
