West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd provided an unlikely goal and winner as they beat Southampton in the Premier League today.
The former Rennes man climbed highest to nod in Thilo Kehrer’s free-kick beyond Gavin Bazunu into the bottom corner.
The goal was enough for the Hammers to take crucial three points that dragged them up to 14th in the league as they ran out 1-0 winners.
Aguerd expressed delight with his important goal to mark his tenth consecutive league start.
Aguerd said (via West Ham’s website): “I’m so happy. I am a defender, so I always say if I get the chance to help the team, I will do it.
“I am really proud of the team because of what we showed today in front of our fans.”
VAR took their time to inspect the goal before giving it, and Aguerd admitted that those moments were nervy.
He reaffirmed that set-pieces were a strength for David Moyes’ side, and they worked on them in training.
The Hammers are now unbeaten in their last five home games. They have taken 11 points at home this year, beating Everton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton.
West Ham have also earned draws against Chelsea and Aston Villa. However, they cannot focus too much on today’s win with the fixtures coming thick and fast.
They welcome Newcastle United to the London Stadium on Wednesday evening before a trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on Saturday.
Both opponents are in the top half of the table and West Ham will have to be at their best to get positive results.
Only one point separates West Ham from the bottom three, so the fight for survival is not over.
