Marcelo Bielsa on the verge of becoming head coach of Uruguay

Legendary Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa is on the verge of being appointed as the new head coach of Uruguay, according to TyC Sports.

Bielsa has been on a sabbatical since he was sacked by Leeds United in February last year.

He was one of the top contenders for the managerial position at Athletic Bilbao last summer – the club he managed between 2011 and 2013 – before the Basque outfit appointed Ernesto Valverde.

A return to the Premier League also appeared to be on the cards as he was one of the favourites for the manager job at Everton upon the sacking of Frank Lampard at the start of this year.

However, a move failed to materialise, with the Toffees eventually going with Sean Dyche.

Bielsa has now chosen Uruguay as his next destination, and the report adds that he will pen a new contract with the South American giants until 2026.

Mexico were also keen on the former Marseille manager, but Uruguay have managed to persuade him.

La Celeste endured a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign under Diego Alonso, failing to progress past the group stage. Alonso subsequently resigned from his position.

Bielsa has previously had spells with the senior teams of Argentina and Chile.

He notably led La Albiceleste to a Summer Olympics triumph in 2004 and a Copa America runners-up finish in 2004.

Uruguay will be hoping for Bielsa to create a similar impact as he did with Leeds in his recent stint and lead them to Copa America glory next year.
