Ilkay Gundogan’s agent says player’s future is open amid Barcelona links

Ilkay Gundogan is in the final year of his contract with Manchester City and looks set to leave the club.

However, his next destination remains unknown heading into the summer, although Barcelona are reportedly leading the race.

The links between Gundogan and Barcelona are strong, but his agent said his future is still open.

Ilhan Gundogan, uncle and agent of the player, has denied any agreement with the La Liga club.

Ilhan Gundogan said (via The Guardian): “There is definitely no agreement yet with any club. The focus of Ilkay in recent weeks was only on Manchester City and the birth of his son.

“Now, he is in the final and crucial phase of the season and is completely focused on that. Where Ilkay plays next season is still open.”

There are not many clubs pushing for the 32-year-old as hard as Barcelona. The player would arrive for free, which is an enticing prospect for the cash-strapped club.

Gundogan arrived in Manchester in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund, where he established himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in Europe.

Despite initially struggling with niggling injuries, he became crucial for manager Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard has used the player in several positions in his systems.

Gundogan has made 290 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 53 goals and assisting 27. The VFL Bochum academy graduate will be a massive miss at the Etihad Stadium.

Even as he enters the last phase of his stay at the club, he remains ever-important. He has made 37 appearances this season, bagging four goals and four assists.
