Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan undecided about his future

The chances of Ilkay Gundogan swapping Manchester City for Barcelona are increasing with each day passing.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the Germany international has yet to decide on his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium amid growing speculation linking him with a free transfer to Spain.

Gundogan has faithful servant to City for almost seven years after leaving Borussia Dortmund to link up with them in 2016.

Having racked up 290 competitive appearances for the Cityzens, the 32-year-old has been rightfully named the club’s captain, surpassing even Kevin De Bruyne in the pecking order.

But Pep Guardiola’s constant squad rotations have seen the German star make ‘only’ 20 Premier League starts this season, which seems to haven’t gone down well with the deep-lying playmaker.

Gundogan’s deal at Man City runs out in the summer, and while they’d like to extend his contract, it seems the player has second thoughts on his first-team prospects at the Etihad.

Despite entering the autumn of his playing career, the highly-rated midfielder has still generated high-profile inquiries, with Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez earmarking him as one of his top targets for the summer.

The Catalans’ financial turmoil has not affected the club’s ever-growing ambitions in the transfer window, as they seem ready to commit to another high-profile contract.

While Gundogan would arrive on a free transfer, provided Man City failed to convince him to pledge his future to the blue shirt, Barcelona would still have to allocate significant funds to match his wages.

However, they are not alone in the race to sign the Cityzens skipper, according to Romano.

Another unnamed club could ruin Barca’s plan to grab Gundogan for free.

The player has yet to inform Man City of his decision, but as time passes, the possibility of him leaving Manchester increases rapidly.
