Chelsea losses force owners to dig deeper ahead of their proposed stadium project

The fallout from the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea has left the club’s new owners picking up a sizeable financial tab.

That point was highlighted to perfection by the whopping £121.3 million net losses recently announced by the club for the 2021/22 financial year.

Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali dug deep to acquire Chelsea in 2022, ending Abramovich’s time in charge.

Sanctions placed on the club by the United Kingdom government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine undoubtedly impacted the club’s finances.

While the new owners can afford to cover the losses, they are an unwelcome distraction ahead of the next phase of their project.

They are on a mission to provide Chelsea with one of the greatest stadiums in the world by the end of the decade.

Demolishing Stamford Bridge and rebuilding a new stadium is the most likely option, although moving to another site has not been ruled out.

Whichever route the owners head down, the project will reportedly cost around £2 billion and will see Chelsea play on the road for several years.

West Ham United’s London Stadium has been touted as a possible temporary home, but that move is unlikely to find favour with fans on both sides of the divide.

Regardless of where they play in the short term, Chelsea fans will be eager to see what their new home will look like.

The project is expected to be showcased this summer as one of the highlights of the upcoming Stadium Summit in June.

Scheduled to take place at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, the event will provide Blues supporters with the chance to examine the club’s proposed new stadium.

Knocking down the existing ground is the favoured option, allowing the club to create a new capacity of at least 55,000.

It has been estimated the project could take at least five years to complete but would allow the Premier League club to deliver on their aim of having the best stadium in Europe.
