Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is facing charges in court over rape allegations.
His wife, Hiba Abouk, has spoken up for the first time following the news to lend her voice to rape victims.
A 24-year-old woman from Fontenay-sous-Bois in the Parisian suburbs went to a local police station to lodge a complaint in late February.
The woman claimed Hakimi raped her, but she did not press charges. However, the police officer on duty notified their superiors due to the severity of the crime.
The Hauts-de-Seine Territorial Security quizzed him about the incident in early March. Prosecutors questioned Hakimi and charged him that week.
A month on from the emergence of the allegations, Hakimi’s wife has broken her silence.
The Spanish actress posted on her Instagram (via RMC Sport): “One must trust the legal process, especially considering the gravity of the accusation.
“Nonetheless, in my life, I always have been and always will be, on the side of victims.”
She defended her initial silence on the matter. The 36-year-old said she is divorcing the Morocco international after eight years together.
Abouk said she had separated from Hakimi while the divorce procedure continued.
She says she was still nursing the emotional pain of the divorce and could not deal with the accusations against the father of her two children.
Abouk asked people to keep her private life and children away from the discourse.
Since the accusations, Hakimi has continued his career. He was at FIFA’s The Best awards ceremony after the news broke, but he is now under legal supervision.
Hakimi has started games for PSG when fit. He also featured in a friendly Morocco win against Brazil this weekend.
Les Parisiens are standing by the defender, who vehemently denies the accusation. His lawyer Fanny Colin insisted that the allegations were false.
