Antoine Griezmann considering his international future after France captaincy snub

Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann is considering his international future after France snubbed him for the captaincy, according to L’Equipe.

Didier Deschamps gave the armband to Kylian Mbappe. The 24-year-old will lead Les Bleus for their latest round of games following the international retirement of Hugo Lloris.

Griezmann and Mbappe were the primary contenders for the armband, but the Atletico Madrid man felt he had the upper hand.

He turns 32 today and is the second most experienced player in the squad behind Olivier Giroud. He has 117 caps with 42 goals and 36 assists. Alongside Mbappe, he played every 2018 and 2022 World Cup game for France.

Within the dressing room, Griezmann is also a popular figure and has everyone’s respect. He also shares a good relationship with Deschamps.

Griezmann will be the vice-captain going into games against the Netherlands and Ireland this week. The way these games pan out will determine his international future.

The former Real Sociedad and Barcelona attacker has seen his international peers such as Lloris and Raphael Varane retiring from the Les Bleus set-up and may decide to follow suit.

Deschamps spoke about Varane’s retirement, alluding that he was unhappy that the Manchester United centre-back decided to leave but would respect the decision.

Ahead of the upcoming international games, it will be interesting to see where Deschamps will use Griezmann. He usually operates as a support striker but he played in midfield at the 2022 World Cup.

Griezmann is a naturally hard-working and selfless player. These traits have endeared him to his managers both at club and international level.

If the former Barcelona man retires from the national team, he will be a massive miss for Deschamps, but they have enough talent in their pipeline to replace him.

Apart from the captaincy change, Deschamps has also announced AC Milan Mike Maignan as the new first-choice goalkeeper.
