Real Madrid have opened initial talks over a new deal for Eduardo Camavinga, reports The Athletic.

The versatile France international has impressed at the La Liga club since he joined them from Rennes for €31 million plus bonuses in 2021.

Madrid want to reward the 20-year-old with an improved salary, which will reflect his status as a key player.

Los Blancos also want to include a €1 billion release clause in the deal.

Camavinga still has a little over four years left on his contract, but it could be extended by two or three years.

Eder Militao, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior had a €1bn release clause included in their new contracts last summer.

It would keep suitors away for the foreseeable future, and they want to do so with Camavinga too.

The Frenchman was linked with Arsenal and Chelsea during the January transfer window.

However, Madrid have continued to insist he is not for sale and is very important to manager Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

Camavinga’s extra individual fitness work has also impressed those at the club.

They want to reward him for his commitment and dedication, and talks are expected to progress swiftly.

The youngster is primarily a midfielder, but he has featured regularly at left-back this term.

Camavinga has played 83 games since moving to Madrid, and 43 of them have come this season.

He will be keen to become more than just another important squad player.

With Luka Modric and Toni Kroos edging closer to leaving, Camavinga could soon get his chance to become a mainstay in Madrid’s midfield.
