PSG to stick with Christophe Galtier until the end of the season despite loss to Rennes

Paris Saint-Germain will stick with head coach Christophe Galtier until the end of the season despite their loss to Stade Rennais, according to L’Equipe.

Rennes beat PSG 2-0 at the Parc des Princes to hand Les Parisiens their seventh defeat of 2023. Marseille beating Stade Reims also means that PSG’s lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table is down to seven points.

PSG were dealing with a defensive crisis with Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe all out of action. They started a makeshift defence that did well at first but crumbled early in the second half.

They conceded two goals in three minutes following the restart and could not recover. The demoralising loss led to questions about Galtier’s position at the club.

PSG are out of the Champions League after losing both legs of their round of 16 tie with Bayern Munich.

They are also out of the French Cup after losing to arch-rivals Marseille. Their only chance of silverware is the league title, and they have now dropped vital points.

However, the club authorities will wait until the end of the season before deciding on the coach’s future.

PSG leaders do not want to make any rash decisions they will regret. However, they are still considering the appointment of a new manager.

Sacking Galtier would be an admittance of failure after only one year. Sporting adviser Luis Campos brought him to the club last summer after Kylian Mbappe advocated for PSG to hire the Portuguese director.

PSG are still on course to win a record 11th Ligue 1 title barring any major slip-ups. They have had to deal with injuries to their defenders and botched transfer windows.

Campos will aim to correct his wrongs in the transfer market this summer. They need to sign at least two central defenders, a defensive midfielder, a striker and a winger.

The former LOSC Lille sporting director also plans on breaking up the Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi trident. The latter two players could leave the club this summer.
