Cristiano Ronaldo makes Roberto Martinez’s first Portugal squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers

Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo has made the Portugal squad for their upcoming 2024 European Championship qualifiers.

It is the first team squad coach Roberto Martinez has chosen following his appointment as Portugal’s boss.

Martinez has replaced long-serving boss Fernando Santos who gave the Selecao their only two titles in history.

Santos led Portugal to win the 2016 Euros, and they won the first UEFA Nations League trophy in June 2019 at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

However, Portugal crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-finals leading to Santos’ dismissal.

In came Martinez, who also left his job as manager of Belgium following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Many people wondered whether the former Everton and Wigan Athletic manager would call up Ronaldo.

There were rumours he’d opt for younger options, but he has stuck with the 38-year-old.

Today’s announcement means Ronaldo has received consecutive call-ups for Portugal in the past 20 years. It is also his chance to extend his incredible scoring record on the international stage.

Ronaldo became the first European player to reach 100 international goals in 2020. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is now out in front the world’s all-time leading international scorer with 118 goals.

Portugal take on Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, and the former Real Madrid forward will hope to add to his staggering 198 caps.

Ronaldo has settled in nicely in Saudi Arabia. The former Manchester United man has netted eight goals and assisted two more in seven Saudi Pro League appearances.
