Chelsea and Bayern Munich are no longer pursuing their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach attacker Marcus Thuram, according to Sky Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg.
The Blues were considering a move for the striker during the January transfer window but have now cooled their interest.
Chelsea have since signed Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke to join Raheem Sterling. They also have Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech in their ranks.
While Thuram has operated as a striker this season, he generally plays on the left flank.
Bayern Munich are also no longer interested in Thuram. They want a striker following the departure of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona. They targeted the French international but have now changed their minds.
Die Rekordmeister will look at other options in the market, with Harry Kane their primary target.
With Bayern and Chelsea retracting their interest, Manchester United can move ahead in the race for Thuram.
The 25-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. United are looking for a centre-forward and could use him.
The Premier League club are short of attacking options. They had to sign Wout Weghorst on loan to help in the January transfer window, and he will leave this summer.
United’s other striker Anthony Martial has been battling with injury issues. He has accrued only 452 minutes of playing time this season and United desperately need reinforcements.
Thuram has bagged 11 goals and three assists in the Bundesliga this season. He has scored three more goals and assisted another in the DFB-Pokal.
The former Guingamp forward was part of Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2022 World Cup, helping his side reach the final.
Thuram will be one of the hottest properties in the summer transfer window. He is a potential bargain for most clubs with interest from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga.
