Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon will miss Forest clash due to injury

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon is set to miss Friday night’s clash with Nottingham Forest at City Ground due to an ankle injury, according to the Daily Mail.

Gordon is understood to have picked up the problem while making his full debut in the 2-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday but showed no immediate signs of an injury at full-time.

The Englishman was substituted after 62 minutes, having failed to make an impact in the game, and was left out of the subsequent 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

He is now set to spend at least three weeks on the sidelines, which will see him sit out Friday’s meeting with Forest and the home tie against Manchester United after the international break.

Gordon is still finding his feet at Tyneside following his £40 million move from the relegation-threatened Everton in January.

The youngster came up through the youth ranks at Everton before making his first-team debut in 2020 and quickly established himself as one of England’s brightest prospects, but his time at Merseyside did not end on a cheerful note.

The winger’s move to St James’ Park sparked controversy after he forced a move away from his boyhood club, leaving them stranded in the relegation dogfight.

The 22-year-old is yet to open his goalscoring account for Eddie Howe’s side, having made four appearances since joining the Magpies.

Gordon has netted just three goals in 22 appearances across all competitions this season for Everton and Newcastle and has struggled to live up to his lofty price tag.

He is unlikely to be missed by the Magpies over the next two games after Howe’s men returned to winning ways at the weekend, ending a run of five games without victory thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle will be looking to build on their previous success and head into the break with another positive result against Forest on Friday.
