West Ham United have earmarked Michael Carrick as their potential next manager, according to reports.
David Moyes is currently in charge but is under immense scrutiny after a series of disappointing results this season.
The Scottish boss has led his side to only six wins from 25 matches, collecting a meagre 23 points.
The Hammers registered a great victory over Nottingham Forest last month, with Danny Ings, Declan Rice and Michael Antonio all scoring in their 4-0 success.
However, their subsequent loss to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend was just as emphatic as Roberto De Zerbi’s side pounded them with four goals to win 4-0 at the Amex Stadium.
According to the Sunday Mirror, West Ham have earmarked Carrick as their new boss if they decide to part company with Moyes.
The former Manchester United star has done an incredible job at Middlesbrough. When he was first appointed, they were mired in the relegation zone with just 17 points from 16 games played.
However, the 41-year-old made an immediate impact at the club, leading them to 15 victories from 20 matches.
That impressive run has lifted Boro to third in the Championship table, and they are now top contenders to gain promotion to the Premier League, which is the richest football league.
Carrick was part of Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff at United and was retained for the role when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed.
The former England international also served as caretaker manager after Solskjaer left his role in November 2021. He led the Red Devils to wins over Villarreal in the Champions League and Arsenal in the Premier League.
Carrick left the club shortly after Ralf Rangnick’s appointment.
Should West Ham sack David Moyes?
The Hammers are going through a challenging period at the moment. They are in serious danger of relegation to the Championship, despite heavy investment in the summer transfer window.
A team featuring the likes of Declan Rice, Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca shouldn’t be anywhere near the drop zone. However, they have consistently disappointed with their performances.
Moyes did a solid job after being appointed as manager in December 2019. He secured Premier League safety for the Hammers before leading them to a sixth-place finish the following season.
They enjoyed another brilliant campaign under the Scottish boss, finishing seventh in the English top flight.
However, the 2022-23 season has been disastrous and Moyes is struggling to improve the club’s fortunes.
Some players are also unhappy about his defensive football tactics.
Moyes has been given plenty of time, but he has failed to deliver results. He should be sacked, but West Ham will not be able to appoint a top manager at this stage of the campaign.
