Wigan Athletic confirm delay in wage payments after liquidity issues

Wigan Athletic have confirmed a delay in wage payments for March after liquidity issues.

The Championship outfit were hit with a suspended points deduction after they failed to meet wage obligations on three occasions in 2022.

Wigan made late payments to their employees in June, July and October last year. They were subsequently charged by the EFL with misconduct for failing to comply with Regulation 64.7.

The Latics then entered an ‘agreed decision’ with the EFL, with the club to suffer a three-point deduction if they break the regulation again this year.

The club have now confirmed a delay in meeting wage obligations for March, which is sure to alarm their fans as they are already at the foot of the Championship table.

The club issued the following statement on their official website: “Wigan Athletic can confirm that there has been a delay in meeting wage obligations.

“Whilst responding to media speculation is not typical of the club’s standard approach, we would like to assure stakeholders that this is a temporary matter which is promptly being resolved.

“The club has been disrupted by recent liquidity issues and this continues to be the case, hence the current situation.

“The club wants to emphasise that the financial strength of our ownership group remains robust and they are committed to supporting the club.”

Wigan are one of the favourites to be relegated to League One. They are winless in their last five league matches and are bottom of the table, six points adrift of safety.

Shaun Maloney’s side will be looking for a positive result this weekend, but their task will be hugely challenging against Burnley

Vincent Kompany’s side are flying high at the top of the table, ten points ahead of second-placed Sheffield United

They will seek to extend their lead by winning the Wigan game, which can be watched through Championship streams
