Inter manager Simone Inzaghi could be sacked if his side is eliminated by Porto in the Champions League round of 16, according to Calciomercato.
Off the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Spezia last time out, Inter have now lost eight league matches this term which is more than they did in the previous two seasons combined (seven).
Consequently, the Nerazzurri are 15 points adrift of runaway leaders Napoli at the top of the Serie A standings despite having played a game more.
Despite winning the Italian Super Cup earlier this year and reaching the semi-final of the Coppa Italia, Inter have endured an underwhelming league campaign and will be eager to make a deep run into the latter stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
They currently hold a 1-0 first-leg over Primeira Liga outfit Porto courtesy of Romelu Lukaku’s late winner at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza three weeks ago.
Inter have subsequently been beaten in two of their three outings and another defeat on Tuesday could spell the end of Inzaghi’s time at the helm of affairs.
If Inter fire Inzaghi, Thiago Motta is reportedly the favourite to take over until the end of the current campaign, while a return for Antonio Conte is on the cards as he looks set to depart Tottenham Hotspur when his contract expires in a couple of months.
Ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is also a potential target as the 49-year-old targets a return to management following a six-month spell of inactivity since his dismissal from Stamford Bridge.
Inter Under-19s manager Cristian Chivu is in with a shout, but it is unlikely that he will be handed the job given his lack of top-flight experience when compared to the other candidates.
