Leicester City banish Jannik Vestergaard after questioning Brendan Rodgers’ tactics

Leicester City have told Jannik Vestergaard to stay away from the first team and train alone.

The news comes after the centre-back questioned Brendan Rodgers’ tactics in a Danish newspaper. The club did not authorise the interview.

Rodgers said (via the Daily Mail): “I will not talk too much on it as it was an unauthorised interview.

“He said he didn’t know why. I had to make sure I wasn’t talking to his twin brother because I’ve been very clear on his position on the club. That communication has always been there.

“I was surprised. Anything that happened – we’ll deal with it internally. Any success we’ve had has been with solidarity and I’ll always look to protect that.”

Vestergaard has barely played for the Foxes this season. His last league start came around 14 months ago. He has only started three cup games this term.

However, the club did not take it lightly when he described his situation as ‘strange’ in the interview. He will be training with a fitness coach away from the rest of the squad.

Vestergaard joined Leicester from Southampton in 2021 but failed to adapt to his new surroundings. He has been out of favour since the end of last season.

Leicester wanted to sell the 30-year-old in the summer transfer window, and Fulham were ready to meet their £16 million asking price.

However, Vestergaard rejected the move to London as he did not want to join a newly-promoted club.

That decision backfired spectacularly, with Fulham seventh in the Premier League. Leicester were wary about letting the Denmark international leave on loan and decided to keep him.

During the January transfer window, more opportunities opened for Vestergaard to leave the club. AS Monaco and Hertha Berlin were interested, but he did not move. His partner was heavily pregnant, and doctors advised her not to travel.

Vestergaard has a contract with Leicester until 2024. It does not look like the club will try to terminate it, but he will likely leave this summer.
