Tottenham Hotspur vs AC Milan Preview – Prediction, how to watch & potential line-ups

Tottenham Hotspur vs AC Milan Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to overturn a one-goal deficit when they welcome AC Milan to north London for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday evening.

Spurs failed to find a response to Brahim Diaz’s seven-minute opener at the San Siro Stadium three weeks ago. But a potential comeback on home turf is not off the table, especially with Antonio Conte set to return to the dugout.

Both sides will head into Wednesday’s tie decider off the back of disappointing domestic defeats.

Following their defeat in Italy, Spurs have recorded just two wins from their subsequent four games, losing the other two.

Three days after bowing out of the FA Cup to Championship side Sheffield United, Spurs succumbed to another 1-0 away defeat in the Premier League – this time at Wolverhampton Wanderers courtesy of Adama Traore’s second-half goal.

Conte’s side are fourth in the league, but they are far from sitting comfortably, with Jurgen Klopp’s reinvigorated Liverpool side slowly creeping up on them with a game to spare.

Tottenham are on the verge of a third last-16 elimination from their last four runs in European football.

However, they stand a fighting chance seeing as Stefano Pioli’s side are hardly entering the second leg brimming with confidence.

Milan’s victory over Spurs marked the second of a four-game winning run across all tournaments, including clean sheets in Serie A wins over Torino, AC Monza and Atalanta last month.

However, their trip to Fiorentina at the weekend ended in despair. Nicolas Gonzalez’s penalty and Luka Jovic’s flying header stunned the Rossoneri before Theo Hernandez reduced the blow with a last-minute consolation.

The reigning Serie A champions look set to relinquish their crown at the end of the season, and the Champions League represents Milan’s only chance of silverware this term.

However, their record in their last three trips to the English capital gives cause for worry to the Milan fans.

Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs may have one foot out the Champions League door, but their record from losing positions in Europe is enough for the white flag bearers to cheer their side to a potential comeback.

They have managed to progress from two of their last three European knockout games after losing the first leg – doing so against Ajax in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final and against Paços de Ferreira in qualifying for the 2021/22 Europa Conference League.

A three-game winning run at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, during which they have prevented Manchester City, Chelsea and West Ham United from scoring, is also cause for optimism.

However, they have lost four of their last six home matches in the Champions League knockout stage (W2), including each of the last two.

Conte’s return to the dugout should come as a major boost to Spurs, who are in dire need of inspiration, as the Italian has won five of his last six home games against Milan in all competitions (L1).

AC Milan

Milan are just 90 minutes away from reaching the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign. However, posting just two wins from their last eight games on the road will do them no favours in that regard.

Milan have won just one of their 21 away games against English sides in all European competition (D7, L13) since beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in February 2005.

They have also recorded just two wins in their last six Champions League games away from home since 2021.

On a brighter note, Milan have suffered just three eliminations from their last 21 Champions League knockout games after winning the first encounter.

However, trips to London have always ended in despair for the Italian giants – they have lost each of their last three visits there by an aggregate score of 9-1.

Milan have won their last three Champions League matches, but they have not embarked on a longer streak in a single season since their run of five between February and April 2005.

They have not won both legs of a knockout tie in the competition since the 2004/05 quarter-final against local rivals Inter Milan.
