Mauricio Pochettino keen on Tottenham Hotspur return if Antonio Conte leaves

Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing a return to Tottenham Hotspur if manager Antonio Conte departs, reports the Times.

The Italian could leave the north London club before or at the end of the season.

Conte has been recuperating from a gallbladder removal surgical operation.

He will return to the dugout tomorrow when Spurs play AC Milan in the return leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

They lost 1-0 in the first leg in Italy last month and failure to proceed to the quarter-final of Europe’s elite competition could spell the end of Conte’s Spurs reign.

Pochettino is among those being considered as a potential replacement for the Italian.

The Argentine remains a fan favourite at the north London club after his impressive first spell.

Despite winning nothing with Spurs, Pochettino helped them reach the finals of the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

He was fired in 2019 after over five-and-a-half seasons at Tottenham and replaced with Jose Mourinho.

Pochettino joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and won the Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions and Ligue 1.

However, he was fired after 19 months and has been out of work over the last seven months.

The decision to hire him lies with chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici.

Pochettino remains in touch with Levy and they are good friends. However, the Spurs chairman and Paratici must agree for the Argentine to return.

The Italian has his preferred tactical system in managers.

Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte favour a wing-back system, while Pochettino plays with a back four.

Plenty of things have to come into place for Pochettino to land the Spurs job, and it will be interesting to see how that unfolds.
