Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says Wout Weghorst does not have the quality to play for the Red Devils.
This comes after Liverpool ran riot over United at Anfield on Sunday, obliterating their biggest rivals 7-0 to inch closer to the Premier League top four.
United manager Erik ten Hag deployed Weghorst as a number ten behind Marcus Rashford, who led the line.
However, it proved ineffective as the Dutchman was a spectator throughout his 58 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by academy product Alejandro Garnacho.
By that time, Jurgen Klopp’s side had already established a three-goal lead thanks to goals by Cody Gakpo (2) and Darwin Nunez.
Ten Hag’s substitutions did little to spark a comeback. Nunez notched his second of the game, and Mohamed Salah also grabbed a brace before Roberto Firmino completed the rout after coming off the bench.
Scholes singled out Weghorst after the game, issuing a damning verdict on the chances of the Burnley loanee staying at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season.
“You’re talking about a Manchester United No 10 or a centre-forward – he’s in the team to be defensive,” Scholes said (via the Evening Standard).
“He’s the one who runs about and rants about, and everybody likes playing with him because he does that. But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United. It’s not there.”
Weghorst joined United on a short-term loan deal in January but has struggled to make any significant impact on the team.
The 30-year-old has posted just a goal and three assists in 14 appearances, and his chances of a permanent stay next summer are next to none.
United are expected to scour the market for a new number nine. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen top the club’s shortlist for next summer.
