Mats Hummels set to decide Borussia Dortmund future this month

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is nearing the end of his contract with the club and will decide his next step at the end of this month, according to Sport Bild.

The 34-year-old centre-back currently has three options, but it is unclear which one he will choose.

Hummels could sign a contract extension with the club. He is one of the squad leaders, and they are willing to keep him.

However, he must take a 50% pay cut on his current salary. The contract will also be more performance-based.

Any new contract will likely come with an additional post at the end of his playing career, such as a club ambassador or youth coach role.

The second option would be for Hummels to head abroad, and he has spoken about a move to the United States. There is interest from Major League Soccer (MLS)

However, his family would prefer to stay in Europe. He could move to one of the top five leagues in Europe and continue his glittering career.

His last option is retirement. Due to his struggles with niggling injuries over the past few seasons, he may consider hanging up his boots.

Despite his age, the former German international is still a steady performer for Edin Terzic’s side. He has played 15 out of 22 Bundesliga games for BVB this season.

Hummels has helped his side keep five clean sheets. He was never the most athletic, but he reads the game excellently and possesses astute quality on the ball.

His injury problems may worry potential suitors, but he is still a capable defender.
