Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan in line for shock Dortmund return amid search for Bellingham’s replacement

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been shortlisted by former club Borussia Dortmund who are in the market for Jude Bellingham’s replacement, according to SPORT 1.

The England international is arguably the most sought-after midfielder in Europe this season, but Dortmund have not given up on trying to keep him beyond next summer.

However, Bellingham will likely leave at the end of the season despite his exorbitant price tag, and Dortmund have begun searching for a replacement.

Der BVB are understood to be closing in on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Daichi Kamada on a free transfer, with his contract set to run out at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga giants are offering the Japanese playmaker a lucrative €40 million salary package that will see him earn around €6m per season over a five-year contract.

While they are yet to get a response from Kamada’s camp, it is understood that the 26-year-old is not seen as a replacement for Bellingham.

He will replace Mahmoud Dahoud, who is expected to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Dortmund’s extensive shortlist of players to replace Bellingham includes Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone, Ajax star Mohammed Kudus, Lorient’s Enzo Le Fee and former player Gundogan.

Gundogan’s current deal with Man City runs out at the end of the season, and with the club planning a summer rebuild, the Germany international could be one of the players sacrificed.

He left Dortmund to join the Premier League champions in 2016 and has racked up 286 appearances, chipping in with 52 goals and 37 assists.

The German proved decisive in Man City’s league triumph last season, scoring a brace on the final day of the season to secure the title for Pep Guardiola’s side.

He has continued to impress this season, posting three goals and three assists in 21 league games thus far as the champions look to defend their crown.
