Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Preview – Prediction, how to watch & potential line-ups

Saturday’s Premier League action rounds off at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace and Liverpool go head-to-head in a mid-table fixture.

Palace’s hopes of turning their fortunes around in 2023 suffered another heartbreak last weekend as Brentford pegged them back in the dying seconds to secure a 1-1 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Left to rue wasted chances, under-fire manager Patrick Vieira had to settle for another useless point, as the Eagles remain the only side in the Premier League yet to win a game this calendar year (D4, L4).

Stuck five points behind tenth-placed Chelsea, the Londoners have recently lived up to their reputation as ‘stalemate specialists,’ drawing four of their last five league matches (L1).

While sharing the spoils with Liverpool wouldn’t be a small thing to do in ‘normal circumstances,’ Vieira’s men may be gunning for all three points on Saturday, encouraged by their visitors’ woeful week.

Back-to-back Premier League wins, including a 2-0 thumping of Newcastle United last weekend, gave the impression the Reds could be on the brink of turning the corner.

Even an early 2-0 lead against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie on Tuesday suggested Jurgen Klopp’s side could be regaining former heights.

However, Los Merengues responded ferociously, scoring five unanswered goals in 46 minutes to hand the fallen Merseyside giants a disgusting 5-2 defeat at Anfield.

Match Preview

Crystal Palace

Since a 2-0 triumph at Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve, Palace have gone winless in seven consecutive Premier League fixtures (D4, L3) for the first time since a run of eight in July 2020.

It goes from bad to worse for the Eagles, considering you’d need to look back to late October for their last top-flight triumph at Selhurst Park, casting further doubt on their bid to beat the odds here.

Vieira’s lads will also have to overcome a significant mental barrier after losing their last seven home league encounters against Liverpool by an aggregate score of 22-6.

Liverpool

After an underwhelming 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at Anfield, Liverpool could go winless in both seasonal Premier League clashes against Palace for the first time since 2014/15.

With six points separating them from fourth-placed Newcastle at the start of this round, achieving that unwanted feat would land a potentially fatal blow to the Reds’ hopes of fighting for Champions League football.

On the upside, Klopp’s team claimed a pivotal victory at St James’ Park last weekend, ending an abysmal run of three consecutive league losses on hostile turf by an aggregate score of 9-1.
