Paris Saint-Germain attacker Neymar had to leave the pitch on a stretcher during his side’s enthralling 4-3 win over LOSC Lille today.
The attacker landed awkwardly and completely twisted his ankle in the centre circle, leading medics to rush to treat him.
They substituted the 31-year-old after 51 minutes, with Hugo Ekitike replacing him. It is another ankle injury for the attacker, who has suffered his fair share of them since joining Les Parisiens.
The injury comes at an unfortunate time for the club, with a trip to Bayern Munich in the Champions League in 17 days.
PSG already have a deficit to overturn at the Allianz Arena in Germany. They will likely have to try without Neymar, who will be out of action for a while.
The Brazil international was looking lively for the Ligue 1 champions today. He provided one assist before scoring to establish a 2-0 lead.
However, Lille bounced back to lead 3-2. But with PSG facing their fourth consecutive loss and a sixth of 2023, they turned things around at Parc des Princes.
Kylian Mbappe scored late in the game to bring the game level before Lionel Messi fired in a free-kick to win it.
The victory came at a cost, with left-back Nuno Mendes also exiting in the first half with an injury. He was replaced by Juan Bernat.
Tensions rose on the field during the game, with PSG players looking befuddled after giving up a two-goal lead. New vice-captain Mbappe was visibly angry at the defence for conceding in a 1 vs 4 situation.
Sporting adviser Luis Campos bizarrely joined manager Christophe Galtier on the touchline, screaming at officials and players. Luckily, the Ligue 1 table-toppers won.
The victory will relax Galtier and buy him some time, with his position increasingly under threat recently.
The club reportedly dreams of appointing Zinedine Zidane, but there are links to former boss Thomas Tuchel.
The German still has many supporters within the club’s hierarchy and they could bring him back.
